How does it feel when you’re finally able to live the life you’ve always dreamed of? Blissful? Amazing? Peaceful?
Melanie Moore is beautiful, smart and miserable. For years she’s given up on her dreams to keep peace within her family, but now she’s ready to pursue the life she wants. With one small window of opportunity she’s given room to do just that, however, not everyone is happy for her. Facing the repercussions of her decision from her family and a surprising diagnosis that’s threatening everything she’s been working for leaves Melanie wondering if her dreams were ever supposed to be anything more than a dream.
Then enters Kamali James – a natural born nurturer, and a man who has been a giver and lover all of his life… until he crosses paths with the beautiful Melanie Moore. Melanie doesn’t have time for a relationship, let alone the emotional strength to deal with everything she’s going through. Will she let Kamali in to be the rock that she needs and continue pursuing her dreams, or will she give up on everything… including him?
He looked at his watch. “My next one should be here.”
I stood up as he pushed off the counter. He grabbed me in a one armed hug as we walked out of the break room and as black as black can be he announced, “My sis is opening a bakery! Make sure all ya’ll support.”
I punched him in his side and he started laughing. Everyone that worked in the barbershop had my baked goods, so they were genuinely excited for me. Especially Shawn. He was probably going to be my best customer, “Melly, please tell me it’s going to be near here. I can get my fix a few times a week instead every other month.”
I smiled, “You know what, Shawn, just because I know you’re going to be one of my best supporters I’m gonna bring you something new that I’m working on.”
Shawn threw up his hands, “If I’m not here when you bring it call me. Don’t leave it with anybody. Niggas ’round here steal.” Shawn looked around the barbershop side eyeing his partners.
These guys were characters, “Will do, Shawn. Bye, everybody.”
As I was leaving out I bumped into a legit hard body. My eyes slowly traveled upwards and were met by a beautiful pair of hazel ones.
We stood at the entrance I’m sure thirty seconds too long and that was probably my fault because he had already moved so I could go by. I just hadn’t budged.
“Mel, you gonna let my boy pass or what?”
I turned to look at my brother, “What, Amad?”
“I said are you going to let him get by you?”
Turning back to look at the guy, it finally clicked that I was still standing in his way. “Oh, shoot yeah sorry.”
His mouth curved into a half smile and I mentally fainted.
“It’s all good.”
I watched him walk past me and sit in my brother’s chair.
I guess Amad felt the need to explain as he put the cape around hazel eyes’ neck, “Kamali, man excuse my sister. She’s opening up a business. I’m sure she has a lot on her mind.”
Why was I still standing at this door?
“A business? What kind?” His voice was swoon worthy. It was rich and deep and I believe that question was for me, but Amad answered it.
When I heard my brothers voice I brought my focus back to the conversation.
Kamali was still staring at me, “Congratulations.”
Kamali’s phone started ringing breaking our eye contact.
I looked up at Amad to find him wearing a smirk I wanted to smack off. I rolled my eyes at him and walked out.
As soon as I got outside I texted him.
I really can’t stand you.
Amad: But I love you. Want me to put in a good word for u? Kam a good dude.
No! Amad don’t make me hurt you!
Amad: Don’t worry sis. I got you! 😉
Amad was going to make me hurt him. Kamali was fine, but I had way too much on my plate right now to entertain a relationship. A friendship though was something I could work with.
