SYNOPSIS

After an unusual first encounter, two complete strangers simply trying to escape their harsh realities by vacationing on a beautiful island find themselves in a situation neither bargained for. As their short time together begins to dwindle, neither can help but wonder if them crossing paths was merely a coincidence or a twist of fate meant to pull them together. In this sizzling novella, Moira and Chance have nothing to lose, but so much to gain. Will they be able to continue on with what started as an innocent fantasy, or will reality be better than their fantasies causing them to want more?

SNEAK PEEK

“Damn.”

His deep baritone sliced through the silence in the air. As I was, he was confused as hell. He slowly sat himself up, trying to take in his surroundings when he saw me. I don’t know what I was expecting, but the shake of his head wasn’t it. He went to sit himself up, meaning that I had to stand for him to do so. He ran both of his large hands down his face, all the while continuing to shake his head.

“What time is it?” He asked.

“I… I don’t know,” I admitted.

He looked at me, almost as if to say, “Are you serious.” It didn’t bother me before the condition I was in. Aside from the embarrassment at least. Now, I was downright feeling sorry for myself. I don’t know how I told myself to hold it together only to have fallen completely apart at the seams.

“How you feeling? Better than earlier I hope.”

The comment was innocent. Harmless. I knew it was, but it only made me feel worse. All I could think about was what this man possibly thought about me. What anyone who was around thought about me. Being around complete strangers was supposed to be the best part of this trip, but it had quickly become the worse. I really was better than getting pissy drunk and throwing up all over the place, but I’d let my issues reduce me to nothing but a story people would be laughing at with their friends.

“I guess.” I shrugged.

It came off colder than I realized. Because of it, he chuckled, slowly rising to his feet. He collected his things, all the while continuing to shake his head at me.

“Nasty ass bitch,” He mumbled.

“What did you just call me?”

He exhaled sharply, jaw clenching as he stared at the ground. His nostrils flared wildly as he massaged his temples. He was so damn quiet that I would’ve thought he hadn’t heard me, but I knew that wasn’t the case. However, I was still about to repeat myself. I didn’t know who he thought he was talking to, about rather, but he had me fucked up.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be disrespectful, but you do have a nasty ass attitude. I don’t fucking know you, let alone what the fuck you have going on, yet I’ve wasted an entire day of my vacation babysitting your grown ass. Trying to make sure you got where you needed in one piece and staying because you asked me to. Just for your rude ass to act like that shit is nothing. I hope you feel better, but I’m out.”

FINAL SNEAK PEEK-COULD THIS BE LOVE

Hey, gorgeous! Tomorrow Kay Shanee returns with Could This Be Love, and we have one final sneak peek to share with you before it goes live!

Could This Be Love

SYNOPSIS

Twenty-seven-year-old, single mother, Nia Simpson’s professional life couldn’t be better. She loves everything about her job as a Human Resources Training Manager. However, her personal life leaves a lot to be desired. Her last relationship ended horribly, over four years ago. Refusing to be burned again, she decided to focus on her career, and because she isn’t a fan of one night stands, her sex life is non-existent.

In comes Raffiel.

Thirty-two-year-old Raffiel Jeffries is every woman’s dream. Tall, dark, handsome, and beyond successful. As the CEO of Jeffries Management, Inc., he can have any woman he wants and there have been times in his life when he did just that. However, as he’s gotten older and more mature, he has a strong desire to love one and be loved by one woman. He thought he had found that in his ex but she was a fraud.

When these two meet, sparks fly and they can’t resist the pull they have on each other. However, the baggage that they both bring to the table creates some issues that neither one of them is prepared to handle. Even still, controlling the speed at which they are falling for each other is impossible as they both question if this could be love.

SNEAK PEEK

Nia rolled over to the other side of the bed where her suitcase was located on the floor and retrieved her vibrator. Once she had it in her hands, she got comfortable and turned the volume up on the television. Your Majesty might not be the real thing but he treats her pussy right.

She closed her eyes and turned Your Majesty on the lowest setting and stimulated her clit briefly before pushing him inside her already slippery walls. Her mind went back to her and Raffiel in the conference room. The thickness of his dick and the way it curved to the left…or maybe it was the right. She couldn’t remember but she knew that upon its entrance into her honeypot, it felt like he was made for her.

The lowest setting wasn’t doing it for Nia so she pressed the button twice and kicked him up a couple of notches.

“Oh shit!” Nia said louder than she meant to as she pushed and pulled Your Majesty in and out of her pussy.

Unbeknownst to her, Raffiel had been standing just outside her hotel suite door for the past few minutes. When left Nia earlier that night, he had a feeling that she wouldn’t do as he told her and call him when she finished working. After Raffiel arrived at his condo, he couldn’t get Nia off his mind. He tried to do some work but failed to stay focused. Then he decided that a workout is what he needed and had an intense session in his home gym. Although that did distract him for a while, his mind  kept going back to Nia.

After he showered, where he stroked out a good nut with thoughts of Nia, it was only nine o’clock. At that point, being away from her felt like complete torture. He picked up his phone to call her a few times but thought against it. After another hour or so battling with himself, he said fuck it. That’s how he ended up back at the hotel.

More times than not, being who he was, bothered him. Being from one of the wealthiest families in Atlanta, his last name rang bells around the city. It was common knowledge that Raffiel had recently taken over his father’s company. His circle of friends was mostly family and a few people that he’s known all his life. He rarely let outsiders in.

However, tonight, using his name and a few bills got him the key card to Nia’s suite. Raffiel inserted the key card, hoping that Nia couldn’t hear the beep. Once he saw the green light, he turned the knob and slowly pushed the door open and crept inside, closing the door softly behind him.

The entrance to the suite was behind a wall and narrow hallway. He began to remove his clothing as he walked inside. As he got closer, he heard moaning coming from the area where the bed was located. He stilled his movements so that he could hear clearly and realized that the moans were definitely Nia’s.

His first thought made him angry. She wouldn’t dare be fucking another man after giving herself to him just hours earlier. What kinda fuck shit is that?

FINAL SNEAK PEEK-A LOVE UNREFINED

Hey, reader!

Tomorrow Ivy Laika returns with A Love Unrefined, and we have one final sneak peek to share with you.  A Love Unrefined, which features Angel and Saint is a spinoff from Untainted Love with Ladi and Ace Baptiste.  If you haven’t read Untainted Love we’ll make sure to link it at the bottom.

ALoveUn

SYNOPSIS

A Love Unrefined is a spinoff of Untainted Love. It can be read as a standalone but to better understand Angel and Saint’s story, I recommend reading Untainted Love first.

Marriage was never meant to be easy. Saint and Angel Baptiste are proof of that. With ten years of being together and nine years of marriage behind them, they believe that they are the strongest they have ever been.

Angel has fought with demons from her past daily so that she could learn how to properly love the man that gave her everything. She thought she had outgrown the feeling of fear but when she must reveal a secret that she’s kept from him for over a year, she becomes unsure if Saint will continue to fight against her fear.

Saint had fought for Angel’s trust and love since the day they first met. She was stubborn, but she had finally met her match with him. He conquered what was at first the impossible task of gaining her trust. But when Angel’s secret is revealed, he realizes that he couldn’t have been more wrong.

Will the bond they built be broken because of Angel’s secret? A love unrefined has its hurdles but will the two be able to get past the new ones that they are faced with? Or will they call it quits after a decade of love?

SNEAK PEEK

I blacked out as I busted through the door. Startled, they both turned around to see me standing at the doorway. “What did you say Monica?”

Monica looked between Angel and I but didn’t answer the question. “Baby,” Angel whispered taking a step towards me. I took one back. As much as her love healed any pain I had ever gone through, I was too afraid it wouldn’t be able to heal this one.

“Repeat what you said right now!” I barked causing the two of them to jump back. Tears formed in Angel’s eyes slowly rolling down her pecan colored cheeks. The last time I had seen those tears was after Miracle’s birth. The irony of it tormented my soul. Ten years, I put my all into gaining and keeping her trust. I took down every single brick of the wall that she barricaded her heart with. My heart had its own scars from the barbed wire she had surrounding hers to keep love from coming in. I had literally killed for her. A woman that after three encounters, I knew would be my wife. All of that, only for her to go back on her word of giving me honesty and trust.

“Please baby, let me explain,” she pleaded with her words and tears, but they didn’t faze me. I didn’t want her to beg. No pleading. None of it. All I wanted was honesty and trust.

“I did it for us baby. Please let me explain. I didn’t want us hurting anymore. I regret it baby. I swear I do. I’m going to reverse it baby. I didn’t tell you because I was trying to protect you.” With each word she spoke, she took a small step towards me. With each step she took, I took one back.

I didn’t like that she did it but a part of me, the important part, understood why she did it. She wanted to protect us from pain, I got that. She was afraid of another loss, I understood that too. My heart didn’t understand but logic did. For the first time when it came to Angel, I was going to side with logic instead of my emotions.

“When did you do it Angel?”

Angel began chewing on the inside of her right cheek and I became numb all over. Her tale. Whatever she was about to tell me, I could already feel the effects of the devastation that was going to rain down on me. My chested tighten as I awaited her answer.

“Right after Miracle was delivered.”

A year and half. She kept it from me for a year in a half. My already boiling blood grew hotter. Turning away from her, I used every ounce of strength I had left in me to punch a hole in the wall that was next to the doorway. Monica stood there frozen. Angel. My Miss Pecan. The woman that changed my life for the better brought it crashing down with five words. Right after Miracle was delivered.

FINAL SNEAK PEEK-MUSE ME

Hey, reader!

Tomorrow Mycah Edwards blesses our kindles with the most beautiful, heart stirring and passion filled poetic collection. To prepare you for what she has in store we have one more final sneak peek to share with you.

MMTPC (1)

SYNOPSIS

“Your brown skin imprinted on my mind, I couldn’t forget your smile even while I slept…”

This collection of poetry and prose was inspired by the novel M[USE] ME. It takes you through the emotions I felt while crafting the tragically sensual story of Cassidy and Life. Though there are some pieces of the story in here, if you haven’t had the chance to check it out in its entirety, please do. The love nestled between those pages is an experience that I feel everyone should have and of course I am not just saying this because it’s my work. I’m saying this confidently because of the conversations it will encourage you to have with your significant other whether you’re dating now or in the future when you become committed to another. You are deserving of so much and I hope that you realize this. So this, I dedicate to you. May the love be intense. May the love be real. And most importantly may it make your toes curl like never before.

SNEAK PEEK

WHO AM I

I am the sun and the moon

The bright light, the terrifying dark

The puddle of tears, the bag of giggles

The serenade of shallow breaths that you fall asleep to

The thump of a beating heart

The tar on the roads

The child that cannot read in the back of the class

The baby left on the doorsteps of a stranger’s home

The addict drowning in bliss

The innocent criminal serving a life sentence

The drug dealer

The crack in the sidewalks you stumble over every time liquor allows you to freely speak your mind

I am the period at the end of this line.

The rainbow that appears during the roughest of an hour causing a smile to appear between your lips

The shadow that follows you around

I am the arch in your back from the strokes of pleasure

Love

Hope

Peace

I am the shoulder on which you lean

The fist that knows this isn’t right but blacks your eye

I am the tear that rolls down your face

I am the books in your underprivileged school

The educator

The motivator

The deserter

The one who has so much potential but no purpose

I am the debater with no just cause

The scream that just escaped from your mouth

The door that closed in your face

The music that sends you into oblivion

The words on this page

The storm and the calm

The shiver that slides down your spine when our lips touch

I am the good and the bad

I am the chaos from which you have no escape

I am King

I am Queen

The hands on the clock that reminds you when to wake and when to fall asleep

I am the juices that roll off of your lips as you bite into a piece of fruit

I am everything

Yet I am nothing

SAMPLE

Is it frustrating that I want you but don’t know how to say the words?

I want you to take control of my body the same way you’ve taken over my heart

I know what I want but when it comes time to speak, I just don’t know where to start

You make me feel emotions I’ve never encountered before

My body reacts in a way I’m not familiar with, but I know the tingles and aches are a good thing

If only I knew how to express it to you

If only I could communicate what my body needs

What my mind needs

What my heart needs…

And that’s you in every way

So baby just tell me what can we do to make this easier for us both because I crave you and I know you crave me

Just tell me what the magic words are, and I’ll scream them from the top of my lungs

Are the keywords Enter me? What about feed me?

Just what do I say to let you know that I need to feel you deeper than any soul has gone before

I’ve never been a person of many words so the command can be simple

Just tell me what I need to say to get you in my sacred space

Just tell me what I need to say…

Angel stood up and began walking around the table towards me. I pushed my seat back anticipating what was to come. Her wide hips swaying towards me had me in a hypnotic state. I couldn’t pull my eyes from them. It wasn’t until she straddled me that I looked up into her eyes. There was a mixture of emotions hidden in them. Lust. Pain. Uncertainty. Hope. Fear.

“Kiss me,” she commanded. It wasn’t a question. It was a clear demand. That’s when I realized that I had lost my ability to tell her no. No part of me wanted to deny her. It was no longer an option that I had.

I leaned into her before taking her plump bottom lip into my mouth. I savored the taste of her mouth as our kiss deepened. With one hand on her waist and the other in her thick curly hair, I drew her closer into me. I held onto her as tightly as I could hoping to feed the need that was burning inside of me. Hoping that her sweet saliva would drip down my throat and put out the fire that was threatening to burn me alive. Then she pulled away taking my breath and heart with her.

“Honesty. Can you give me that?” she asked.

Without any reluctance I answered, “Yes. Are you sure you want that?”

THIRD-7/1- SAY HE’LL MAKE IT REAL BY ASH LEY sayhe'llmakeitreal

After an unusual first encounter, two complete strangers simply trying to escape their harsh realities by vacationing on a beautiful island find themselves in a situation neither bargained for. SAMPLE

Because I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings, I’d bumped into someone. Not only had the impact made me lose the contents of both hands, he dropped his items as well. I’m not sure what I expected aside from us gathering our things, but the small talk he tried making wasn’t it.

“My fault, beautiful,” He said.

“I know.”

“Huh?”

“It is your fault, and I am beautiful. Now, thanks for making me drop my food,” I said, snatching my phone from his hand.

I didn’t bother looking at him or picking up the food off the ground. I was honestly glad that I hadn’t gotten any of it on me. I prepared to go on my way when I could hear him snickering. That’s when I turned around, facing him. The view quickly had me swallowing as I took in the stranger I was being unnecessarily rude to. With a tall, muscular build, chiseled and well-defined face and an intense pair of black eyes, he was something to admire. His mahogany skin was free of flaws, and he had a smile to match. Still, I didn’t soften up. Why would I?

“What’s funny?” I questioned.

“You. I didn’t mean to bump into you, but I also wasn’t the only one not paying attention either.”

He was right, and it upset me. I was already upset, but this was certainly making it worse. I didn’t have time for this back and forth about who did this and that. Not with a stranger. When he knew that I had nothing to say back, his lips curved into a smirk. I can’t even lie and act as if I wanted to smack it off his face. How could I when the arrogance made him ten times more attractive?

“Fucking asshole.”

I rolled my eyes, walking off. Laughter didn’t follow behind me, and I was a bit surprised. I wish I had eyes in the back of my head so that I could see if he were trailing me or still stuck in place. When I didn’t feel his presence or hear him speak, I knew he didn’t come after me. Then again, I was probably just some crazy bitch to him.

FINAL SNEAK PEEK: ATONEMENT

Hey, gorgeous!

Tomorrow Ash Ley returns with Atonement: When It All Falls Down the very first book in our new Bittersweet line!

atonement

SYNOPSIS

After her mother’s untimely passing, Juniper Tate left the only home she’d ever known. As the years pass, Juniper realizes the only way to truly move forward with her life is if she returns to the place that still holds so many painful memories. Being welcomed back with open arms makes Juniper think the rash decision is going to be the best she’s made yet. Her desire to feel wanted and shake the loneliness that’s plagued her for so long results in her making one too many mistakes. When it’s all said and done, she finds herself struggling for redemption and being left to pay the price for all of her wrong doing.

SNEAK PEEK

From the beginning, I’d told him I wanted to have sex. I’d even told him it was okay if he expected nothing from me aside from that because I wasn’t interested in shit else. The thing with Laith was, he wasn’t feeling that. He was feeling me. He didn’t just want to have sex. He actually wanted to take the time and get to know me. You didn’t meet too many men who were genuinely like that.

No matter how many times I tried reassuring him it was okay if we did just keep things physical, he in turn reiterated that he wanted something deeper. He was so damn nice and patient. Despite how he tried not to open up, it came effortlessly when I was with him. Crazy enough, it made me want him more, but all we were doing was kissing and hugging. I was lucky if I could get a back rub from this man and I knew I should’ve been grateful, compared to who I could’ve had, but I was bored.

It was ironic, because me and Laith both wanted more, but two completely different versions of what that was. It was like dating a priest or something. Was it going to kill him to give me a little tongue? A little finger action? Did I have to lay in the bed butt ass naked with a sign that read “take advantage of me.” I mean, what the hell was a girl supposed to do to get some play?

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you now, would it?”

“In my defense, you haven’t told me a single thing. Not even that it was a surprise. Can I at least get a hint?”

“No.”

I blew out a breath from his shortness. I wasn’t upset with him, but the suspense was killing me. Sensing how antsy I’d grown; he placed a hand on my knee. This was a prefect example of what I was talking about. My thigh was not even five inches away, yet he chose to play it safe. To play it friendly. I placed my hand on his, slowly moving it to where it should’ve gone in the first place. He didn’t pull away as I expected. He instead smirked, shaking his head.

“You just can’t help yourself, can you?”

“Nope.” I giggled.

He was driving and paying attention to the road. While I knew how important it was to let him keep his focus, I figured this would be a good time at getting some of the sexual tension relieved. Laith might have been good about not touching me, but I knew that it wasn’t easy. The tent in his pants, even now, was always a dead giveaway. I continued moving his hand, spreading my legs in the process.

My heart began to pound in my chest from how bold I was being. It was teetering desperation, but I didn’t even care. Laith had never let me go this far so I was hopeful he was feeling frisky just like I was. He squeezed the inside of my thigh before his hand -of its own free will might I add- located the treasure between my legs. I held my breath, anticipating his touch. He took his bottom lip inside of his mouth and just as he allowed his middle finger to lazily toy between my legs, he was pulling his hand away.

“You are nothing but a tease.”

“And you’re nothing but trouble,” he muttered.

SNEAK PEEK

“So are we done here?” he asked standing to his feet completely ignoring what I said. His body shaded mine. I couldn’t feel the sun beaming down on my back. Raising my eyes to meet his, his distant look told pieces of his story and explained why he wasn’t comfortable telling it to me. Dooney didn’t trust easy and he was embarrassed. I wondered how bad it was for him to be so guarded about it. I needed to do some digging on my own to try and understand his stance on shutting the world out.

“Yea, for the day, but Friday we change your wardrobe for functions. We are doing this whether you tell me your story or not.”

“You just don’t know how to quit huh?” he asked with a slight chuckle. Quitting was one thing my mother never taught me. I was pressing forward because that was my job. We could play this game his way for now but eventually he wouldn’t be able to shut me out. I wasn’t going to give up.

“Damn right, you don’t scare me. I have a job to do and I plan to do it whether you play nice or not. Even if that means I can’t ride you like a boogie board until after.”

“What?” he asked laughing and falling back into the door.

“You heard me. Play nice with me and I’ll play nice with you,” I winked and gathered my things. In the midst of grabbing my purse I knocked it over. All my belongings fell to the floor and as I bent down to pick them up, he spotted my small pouch of pills. I almost knocked him over to get to them before he could investigate. He stood and watched me gather my things and I couldn’t even look him in the eyes. Stepping to the door, he stopped me, lifted my chin and looked in my eyes with a knowing look. The stare was so powerful, I felt my knees buckle.

“Belize, you are probably the sexiest woman I’ve laid eyes on with those gray eyes, light freckles and damn sexy body but I’m not my niggas. You won’t have me out here weeping like a bitch. And you better make sure your hustle bigger than your habit.”

“And, Dooney, let me make something clear since we’re being honest. I don’t quit and I don’t like being told no. I don’t want you weeping, I want you screaming my name. Good day,” I responded. Side stepping and exiting the door, I turned to check if he was watching and he was. Dooney was watching all while licking his lips and stroking his full beard.

SYNOPSIS

They say experience is the best teacher, but apparently, Ashahve still has more to learn. After falling for who she believes is the man of her dreams, familiar patterns and habits start to rear their ugly heads. Determined not to take any chances, she chooses to do something about it early on. However, she wonders if she made the right decision. Her heart won’t let her move on, and it tends to care about past acquaintances far more than it should.

Struggling his entire life to cope with traumatic events, Omari has yet to see so many things go wrong at once. Before he can fully recover from one thing, he’s hit with the next. Life unexpectedly hands out blow after blow. Revealing his true emotions has always been a problem for him, so he does what he knows to do regarding them. It doesn’t help that he still doesn’t know how to handle past disappointments. When new issues arise, they only compound on top of old ones, threatening to make a lethal combination.

Finding peace and learning from past decisions has Elijah living a renewed life. He’s been able to come to grips with his choices and their consequences. There’s only one problem; he still loves the woman he was forced to leave in the past. Despite the advice of others and trying to move on with someone new, he can’t seem to leave her where she belongs. Unfortunately, she doesn’t make this decision easy for him to make. While his attachment to this woman nearly caused his ruin once before, he’s willing to take that risk once again.

Three totally different personalities find themselves weaved into an ugly web, that they never fully made it out of, one of them barely escaping by the skin of their teeth. Unable to control their desires, they find themselves in compromising situations that threaten to take them captive. Who will overcome and come out on top this time?

SAMPLE

I ripped her silk and lace thong right off her, and dove tongue-first into her. Shavi flinched at my roughness and let a moan escape her lips. She was so sweet and was her own flavor of Kool-Aid. I loved Kool-Aid. Swirling my tongue around her trigger, she grabbed my head and pulled me closer, practically drowning me in that mango squeeze. Once I began sucking her clit, I slid two fingers inside of her and held her in place with my other arm.

She was squirming all over the bed, moaning softly, while her hands held my head in pace. I hit that G-spot in the come-hither motion as I sucked her clit. She removed her hands from my head, then grabbed a pillow and screamed into it as she came all over my face. I literally had to stop before she drowned me. She was squirting everywhere, and I loved every minute of it. I couldn’t wait for her to stop.

I wanted her to squirt on me where it counted most. Swiftly removing my pants, I dove into her pussy as she continued to release her juices. Staying on my knees as I lifted her hips and stroked her slowly, I watched that thang juice all over my dick. That shit had me trembling. I was so damned turned on and turned out, I could feel my nut rising already.

It was too soon for that shit. My lil baby deserved an all-night worship of her body. That body was just as blessed as her heart. It was what first attracted me to her. That coke bottle ain’t had shit on Shavi. Her ass was like two fluffy pillows that made a nigga weak and she had the thighs to match that shit.

She removed the pillow from her face as I released her hips and leaned over her, tongue kissing those Hershey kisses on her chest. I swore her nipples had chocolate coming from them. Everything about her body had me addicted… craving her daily. Shit, if I could have her every hour, I would. Her soft moans were like music to my ears, serenading me through this amazing workout. Not to mention the accompaniment her pussy was giving. That made it a masterpiece that I should be recording.

Those gushy noises were like balm to an open wound… healing me in every way imaginable. My lips made their way to hers and I kissed her like my life depended on it. She was the nourishment to my heart… my soul… my mind, and this was the only way I felt completely comfortable saying that to her. I said it through my actions, and by the sounds she was making, I had no choice but to assume she was pleased.

SYNOPSIS

In the final installment of the Love Under New Management series, we finish up with Belize – the youngest member of the crew but probably the most damaged.

Belize Osbourne has her own struggles that make a life of love seem unreachable. They say pretty hurts and as beautiful as she may be, she has some ugly truths that catapult her into a downward spiral. Dawn offers her a job she can’t turn down.

Dooney has been in her line of sight from the very beginning, and he too has trust issues and his own story of the struggle. Dooney has baggage, and bringing Belize in to help him get to the next level of his boxing career is the last thing he wants to do.

With Belize being pushy and knowing she’s the best one for the job, she pushes and inserts herself into his life against his wishes. Eventually, he sees how special she is and lends a helping hand to fight her demons but tragedy hits and causes them to hit pause. The tables turn and both have to find themselves alone so they can be dangerous together. Find out if love will knock them down but be so strong that it also picks them back up.

You know it’s your turn to settle down,” Toni mentioned. Instantly my nose turned up as if there was a strong stench in the room. Toni was on that good foolishness today.

“Just because y’all turned in y’all playa cards doesn’t mean the clock is ticking on me. I’m good single.” I couldn’t wrap my head around why every time we got around we were having this conversation. At one point it was me and Toni convincing Dawn and now they were teaming up against me with talks of the R word.

“We all said that now look at us,” Dawn commented. Her wedding ring twinkled and caught my eye, it was beautiful. Out of the twenty two years on this earth settling down hadn’t crossed my mind like I knew it should have. By now I should have considered it, but I really hadn’t given it much thought. The future scared me when it came to getting married. I couldn’t imagine being with the same person every day all damn day. Or dealing with someone that couldn’t keep it in the pants. I’d be in the darkest hole the penal system had if I got fucked over.

“But you two are different. Ultimately you wanted it. I can’t say that I want it. I’m not totally  against love or monogamy it’s just to much pressure for me.”

“The pressure is the best part. The ability to love someone and fully trust them is almost as good as sex. I know when I come home my person is there to be my person. There’s nothing wrong with being exclusive.”

“I’m happy for you both but being exclusive requires a lot of thinking about others and forgetting about yourself. I’m just not there yet.”

I watched my mother eat and dispose of men my entire life. There was no doubt in my mind that I wasn’t just like her. In high school, I played the boys, and now was no different. She would bring them in keep them around until she got what she needed and by morning they would be gone back home to their wives and children. It was a cycle that planted a seed of fear so deep in me it was now a budding tree of being treated the same.

“She’s still young, Dawn and I can’t blame her. Had it not been for Esko hounding me like a dog I would still be in these streets chewing men up and spitting them out like sunflower seeds,” Toni commented.

“I just fear turning out like Levitra Shante Thorne. She still hasn’t planted her roots and she going on fifty. I’m probably cursed or some shit.”

The only way I could combat the nagging feeling of being the wife was to not become a wife. Over the span of her scheming, several wives had come to our home with makeup running, tears rolling down their faces and kids in tow to address my mother about sleeping with their husbands or draining their bank account.

“You not cursed. You just need to find someone that can show you love and how it opens you to all kinds of other shit. Love is the key,” Dawn said attempting to convince me. Even at a young age I knew I wasn’t cut out for relationships. I hadn’t learned how to love properly because I wasn’t loved properly.

“You know I watched her love everything but me. If your own momma can’t love you who can?”

Third-6/30-Could This Be Love-Kay ShaneeCould This Be Love

SAMPLE

The door opened and the person on the other side of it could have been Nia’s twin. But Raffiel knew that she wasn’t his baby. He assumed it was her younger sister and was glad that she decided to let him in. From the looks of it, Nia was about to let him stand outside all damn night. She was standing away from the door with a .22 caliber gun in her hand.

He walked in and at first, neither Raffiel nor Nia said a word. They held each other’s gaze for what seemed like forever before Raffiel spoke up.

“The hell you gon’ do with that lil shit, Nia?” Raffiel referred to the tiny handgun Nia still held in her hand.

“Wha- what are you doing here?” she asked timidly, her eyes blinking a mile a minute.

“What did you expect? I went to your suite expecting to find you there and it was empty. I lost count of the number of times I called your phone. Did you think that I was gon’ just let you go?” He took a few more steps in her direction.

“I didn’t expect you to fly all the way to Chicago in the middle of the night. You shouldn’t be here.” She walked backward a few steps because she knew that when he touched her any argument she had would be long forgotten.

“I thought we discussed this already.” The sadness and confusion in his voice was very apparent.

“That was before I found out that you owned the damn company! You failed to share with me that important piece of information!” she yelled, swinging the gun.

“Sissy,” Nila approached her and snatched the gun from her hands. “I’ll just take this before you do something stupid.”

Nila scurried into Nia’s bedroom to put the gun back in the box and locked it. She knew that she probably should give them some privacy but she was too nosey and wanted to see how this would play out. Returning to the living room, she sat on the couch and watched the drama unfold.

“Why does that matter? Does me being the CEO change what’s happening between us and how you feel about me?”

“You’re not just the CEO, Raffiel. You own the damn company! I would say that changes a lot!”
